- September 2026
- Description
- Community cats. Spayed and neutered, vaccinated, ear-tipped. Fed every day for about six years by Ranch Rescue volunteers, with the permission of the store's previous management.
- Condition
- Two found dead beside their food bowls. The rest are gone.
Home Depot still hasn't shown us where they are.
Their story keeps changing So which one is it?
-
1Store management, to the volunteer who found the dead cats (per Ranch Rescue)
"The cats are being trapped and taken to a secure facility."
The volunteer was told she can't be on the property and that a private company is handling the cats. Which company? Which facility? They didn't say.
-
2What advocates say Home Depot told them
The cats were taken to the Humane Society and are safe.
-
×Elizabeth Halloran, Executive Director, Humane Society of Lake City
The shelter did not receive any cats from the Home Depot. Its cattery was already over capacity and closed to cat intake.
-
3A Home Depot spokesperson, to WCJB
A third-party contractor using "licensed and bonded specialists" captures and relocates animals.
Relocated where? Which contractor? Still no answer.
What happened
- About 2020 to 2026Ranch Rescue of Lake City runs a managed TNR colony at the store with management's OK. Every cat is trapped, fixed, vaccinated, ear-tipped and returned, then fed daily.
- 2026New store management takes over. Permission for the colony is revoked.
- September 2026A caregiver arrives to feed the cats and finds two of them dead by the food bowls. The rest are gone. An employee says they were trapped and taken to a "secure facility."
- September 20, 2026Protesters gather outside the store asking where the cats are.
- September 2026The Humane Society of Lake City says it never received them. Its executive director goes to the store to speak with the manager in person and is turned away. Corporate doesn't answer her either.
- September 2026Ranch Rescue retains legal counsel to get a full accounting of what happened to the cats.
- TodayNo photos. No video. No location. No answers.
Show us the cats
- Name the contractor that trapped them.
- Say where every cat was taken.
- Show proof they're alive: photos or video, dated.
- Explain how two cats died next to their food.
- Let Ranch Rescue bring them home.
Call. Ask. Keep asking.
Hi, I'm calling about the community cat colony that was removed from the Lake City, Florida store, number 6864, in September. Those cats were spayed, vaccinated and cared for by Ranch Rescue for six years. The Humane Society says it never received them. I'm asking Home Depot to name the contractor that trapped them, say where each cat was taken, and share photos or video showing they're alive. Can you give me a case number for this?
Be firm. Be polite. The person who picks up the phone didn't trap the cats, and being decent to them gets your call logged. Ask for a case number and write it down.
